CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Despite the nastiness yesterday, I feel confident going into my second day of school. I have an appointment at the hospital tomorrow. The doctors will do a complete battery of tests, including a CAT scan, MRI, and DNA tests against Mom, Dad, and Bradley. They won’t be released publicly unless I say it’s okay. I’ve decided I’ll talk to Art and the rest of the Flight 237 support group and see what they think before I do anything.

But when Dylan and JoJo pick me up, JoJo’s sly smile creates a minor ding in my armor.

She has never smiled at me.

“What’s up with her?” I ask Dylan since JoJo is wearing earbuds again.

He frowns. “What do you mean?”

“She smiled at me.”

Dylan side-eyes me. “She does do that occasionally.”

Obviously he didn’t see the way she smiled. Whatever. I won’t let it bother me.

“Hey, did you do any more research on those PATROL people?” he asks.

“No. When I got home last night, I talked Mom and Dad into letting me open a few social media accounts, although they’re all set to private. I’m supposed to let them approve my friend and follower requests,” I repeat in Mom’s voice.

He frowns. “Doesn’t that bother you?”

The way he says it, I feel like it’s supposed to. But as much as I value my privacy, it doesn’t seem like an invasion in this case—probably because there’s nothing there yet. “Maybe it would if I’d grown up with it like you. But considering there are people like Dr. Greaves out there … I don’t want them cyberstalking me because I click Accept or Okay on the wrong person.”

He flicks his fingers off the wheel. “Yeah, I don’t really have that problem.”

No, but there might be a few girls checking him out for other, not-so-nefarious reasons. I press my hands against my hot cheeks, afraid he’ll ask why I’m blushing, but his eyes are on the road, so I’m safe either way.

“My only connections so far are family members. It’s weird to see pictures of my cousins all older. Also how much of them I can learn online. It’s like half their lives are out there for everyone to see.” The thought of being so exposed makes me shiver. “I haven’t actually posted anything myself yet, though.”

For now I’m an observer, and I will be stalking those PATROL people at the earliest opportunity. Maybe after school today. Mom is supposed to pick up a laptop for me so I don’t have to share theirs.

Dylan glances over his shoulder at me as he turns into the school. “Do you think they’ll approve me?”

I purse my lips and twist my hand from side to side. “Iffy.”

“At least I’ve been preapproved for your phone number,” he says. We exchanged those last night. “So start studying up on those emojis.”

Not really at the top of my review list. “Uh, okay.”

When we get out of the car, JoJo casts me another suspicious smile before darting into school. This time Dylan sees it. “Huh,” he says, throwing his backpack over his shoulder.
